How To: Wear Drapey Pants

Whoever designed the drapey pant deserves a kiss. I never considered myself to have a work uniform per say, but I guess I kind of do. I wear drapey pants pretty much everyday during the work week. Soft silhouettes can be tricky, especially when dressing for work because it can go sloppy-meets-pj's real fast. The key is in what pieces you pair with them. Go for more structured items to balance out the look and keep it appropriate for a business casual situation. I typically pair my pants with a collared top of some sort and a blazer or jacket. I love this pant not only for the comfort factor, but the fact that they are not skin tight and really can be worn in many different ways. I've worn drapey pant outfits to work, dinner, bar and even a funeral. Below are some of my favorite ways I wear the pants.

How to Kimono!

Let me show you three ways I styled my kimono for three different occasions: play, work, relaxation:

Ahh the tricky, trendy kimono. Part lightweight robe/duster, part sheer cardigan duo is a trend that has been hot for a couple years now, and it is definitely a piece that can be awkward to style if you don’t think of ways to reinvent it.  The most frequent styling of the kimono is bohemian of course. Google search any image of Coachella for example, and you will find endless hippie-desert-chic cool girls wearing fringed, lace, floral, etc. styles. I bought mine two years ago at H&M, and since I wasn’t sure how long this fad would be around for, I chose a medium length, not too billowy of a style, made of a sleek chiffon material in a dark print that could be universally styled. I’m happy I chose that piece back then, and still find new ways to wear it today. Why do I personally like this trend? Well I have never really been a fan of cardigans. I collect jackets of all types and other toppers, so for spring/summer/fall, I like the kimono as a cute cover to add some zest to an outfit. Below, I featured mine three different ways, none of which are bohemian. Trust me, you can make your kimono work for a classy going out look, a switch-up on the old blazer for work, or paired with a casual outfit instead of a denim jacket. 3 Ways to Wear a Denim Dress!

Ahh the denim dress. Part casual, part chic, and can go untouched in your closet if you're not sure how to re-wear it. This summer the denim uniform of overalls, dresses and even the Canadian tuxedo are everywhere. While I find it too hot to wear a denim shirt in the summer, I still like to incorporate the casual fabric via a cute dress. This one is old, it's from the Derek Lam Design Nation collaboration with Kohl's but I liked it so much because it is a different style than most of the other denim shirt-dresses, shifts and baby doll styles out there. It is definitely more of a tailored dress, with a fitted top and A-line bottom. I'm not brave enough to try overalls, so to style up a chic dress is easy to do with many things you may already own. The great thing about this silhouette is that it is tailored enough to wear to work. Also it is not a thick denim, its more of a soft denim/linen blend. For the office I paired my trusty Lush roll-tab blouse from Nordstrom under the dress and unbuttoned the top 2 buttons to mirror the V-neck of the blouse. It gave it that just-enough sassy bustier look which instantly reminded me of a vest and blouse combo. I added my calf-hair leopard pumps from Calvin Klein, my large Coach tote to fit my laptop and planner and I'm set. Classic yet stylish. For a casual look for shopping and lunching, I had to pair it with my new Topshop flats (I mean lace-up's go with everything!) my vegan leather tote from the Nordstrom sale and a fedora to cap it off. I also unbuttoned the dress to give it a less stuffy look. The last way I styled it was sporty, which is the perfect way to dress up a ball game and dinner downtown. I added a silk bomber jacket, my Nike airmax, a baseball cap and one of my favorite bags which can be worn as both a backpack or cross-body bag (not to mention it has a ton of compartments inside and is safety blocked if you wear it as a backpack, which means no one can come up from behind and unzip it). And can you tell I'm obsessed with brown and cognac bags? Versatile pieces = remixed wardrobe. It's so fun to shop your closet and re-imagine old pieces to make them feel like new!
